Best way to attach a random wire antenna to a scanner?

I have a scanner. It has all shortwave bands. To attach a random wire do I insert antenna wire to the center and clip a ground rod wire to the surrounding screws ? OR, do I attach the wire to the rubber antenna on the unit with a clip, or wrap it around?

Use the antenna jack/terminal.
