For a long time, free services like Skype have partnered with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) – ie using your computer and a broadband Internet line large for long-distance telephone calls. Basically what is used to pay before they came to you for free.
However, the main problem with the service of this kind was, had to be connected to a computer to place the call, and be there for the duration of the call. Something like the "fixed" – You could move, but could not get away. VoIP Thus, despite its usefulness, it was not portable.
That was until companies like Netgear, UTStarcom, ZyXEL and Linksys decided to do something about it – WiFi phones built.
With WiFi phones, VoIP could be portable. So no more necessary equipment, and could move (or off) while you speak, and still be 'in line'.
WiFi phones are like cell phones. But rather than using scheduled airlines, such as Cingular or Nextel, easy Internet use WiFi networks, and open protocols such as SIP, to place their calls.
Unlike a regular phone that transmits voice in analog form (as is, without converting), WiFi phones convert your voice into a digital format and transmitting in packets of binary data to a wireless receiver. The receiver then passes the information through Internet for the call processor. Throughout the process, the IP addresses used in place of phone numbers to start, connect and terminate the call. These IP addresses act as address maps your call – just like when you connect to the Internet and type a web address to go somewhere.
The concept of WiFi phones (and the related technology) is still fairly new. The preference has been so far to use WiFi-enabled laptops and smartphones to log on to a local connection point "- Perhaps in a Starbucks or a mall in the city – and surf the Internet wirelessly. Using a similar system to make voice calls at prices below the market rates (even free) over a wide area of the city, is still in its infancy.
But the fact is that WiFi is a simple, efficient and technology economic. It is also frankly brilliant. Why? Because it has strong roots in digital convergence – the idea of combining as many functions, protocols, services and rules that baffle us, and offers a central solution to simplify the technology itself, a shared need for multitasking world today. And as this technology grows and sink its advantages, is only a matter of time before WiFi becomes the de facto choice central and mobile communication.
