Is there any way to network a USB scanner?

We have an HP Scanjet 5590 scanner, that is currently shared by 4 different people, who have to keep unplugging and plugging into whichever computer is in need of it.
Is there any way to just either network the scanner (I know WinXP doesn’t support it natively) or to add it to a device like you would have for a USB printer, that enables you to plug it into the network? That is, a print server, but for scanners?

Doesn’t really make much sense as the person still has to go over to where the scanner is plugged in, in order for them to use it?

I’m not aware of a device that does this, I know you can buy jet direct boxes for pritners so that they can have an IP address on the network, but not sure of a scanner alternative, these usually cost quite a bit aswell so may be cheaper to buy another scanner.
