When TV goes digital in 2009 will the VHF and regular UHF signals go off the air?
Will channels 2-13 on VHF and 14-83 with the ordinary TV signals just go off the air completely? Or will digital be transmitted on them? If you had an ordinary TV and try to use it after the change over what would you receive?
(This answer assumes you are located in the US)
>When TV goes digital in 2009 will the VHF and regular UHF signals go off the air?
No, there will still be free TV broadcasts on what are now analog channels 2 through 51. What are now analog channels 52-69 will disappear. Channels 70-83 disappeared a long time ago.
This does not mean that a channel 55 will disappear. Unlike analog signals, digital channel numbers don’t correspond to the VHF/UHF frequencies that are actually used. For marketing reasons the digital stations use their old analog channel number even if the actual (or “real”) frequency is in another band.
If you use an analog TV with an antenna after 2/17/09 you will need to attach a converter box between your antenna and TV to receive the digital broadcasts.
If you don’t do this there would be very little to watch because after 2/17/09 only some low power and translator stations will still be transmitting analog signals. If you were along the boarders with Mexico or Canada you could still see analog broadcasts from those countries. Canada will go to all digital broadcasts on 8/31/2011.
