This also marks the first time since 1998 that Ford Motor Co. Toyota has dethroned the first position, grabbing more individual awards than any other manufacturer. The Dearborn automaker ranked highest in five of 19 segments in the survey this year.

Ford earned segment awards for the Ford Mustang, Lincoln Mark LT, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan and Mazda MX-5 Miata. Mazda, maker of the top of the line of wheel axle Mazda is 33.4 percent owned by Ford.

JD Power also Platinum has given the Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects to Wixom Ford assembly plant in Michigan, which stopped making cars in May 31. The Detroit area plant produced the Lincoln Town Car, which averaged 35 problems per 100 vehicles. Plant awards are based solely on defect counts.

Other winners between North and South America were plants of General Motors Oshawa 2 plant in Ontario, Canada – which produces the Buick LaCrosse and Pontiac Grand Prix, Silver Award for plant quality, and American Honda East Liberty, Ohio plant, which produces the Honda Civic sedan and Honda Element for a Bronze Award.

The JD Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, a sector considered quality standards for new cars, surveys of customers about the problems encountered after 90 days of ownership. Complete results are expected to be released later today. Some winners in the segment, however, were already published on the website of JD Power.
