OMAHA, Neb. – Angie Rempe finds itself facing the roof where it goes. It's a nervous habit, born out of life with bed bugs for eight months. "Good night, sleep well, do not let the disease lung. I do not say that, "said Lincoln's wife.

Rempe, her husband and four children moved to an apartment in Lincoln in June. She said that in July, family scratched with unexplained welts that resemble mosquito bites. Inspection of the mattresses revealed a grisly discovery.

"At the moment We learned what they were, the bed bugs were completely covered in the seams of mattresses, "said Rempe.

She is now in the bugs baseboards, cabinets and in crevices in the roof of his apartment.

Bedbugs are flat, brownish insects that feed off humans. Bedbugs adults are about one-quarter inch in size. No spread of the disease, but the psychological impact of these visitors think about the night is disconcerting.

"If it falls on me, I'll scream," Rempe said recently, observation of bed bugs crawl in a hole in the ceiling texture.

Bedbugs can live in second-hand furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses. They lay eggs the size of a pinhead, and bed bugs from adults can remain dormant in a wall without feeding for up to one year.

"I saw the bed bugs in children before. My sister was here one and had to crawl in her ear, "said Rempe.

According to health experts, the United States has seen an increase in bedbug infestations in hotels, apartments and houses in recent years. Experts said that pesticides such as DDT, which controlled the population of bedbugs in the past, are no longer safe for humans.

Last week, officials in New York, Kentucky and Ohio, held emergency meetings to form working groups to educate people about outbreaks of bed bugs suffered by people living in increasing numbers.

New York, deals with bedbug infestations in expensive hotels, with guests from home unknowingly taking bed bugs with them, stowed away in luggage or clothing.

Clean does not come into play in an infestation. Bed bugs found in low-rent apartments and high-end homes. The only requirement is that bed bugs have something to eat.

"Sucking bugs feed only blood. They are parasites, "said Barb Ogg, UNL extension educator.

Property managers and Rempe Lincoln disagree on who is responsible for the infestation of bed bugs. But both are working together to exterminate the pests. Ogg said licensed exterminators must use pesticides every few weeks until inspections show no evidence of life of bed bugs.

Small brown spots on the wall plaques indicate insect droppings of the bed, a telltale sign of a possible infestation.

"You can go in and spray the baseboards and leave," Ogg said.

Ogg instructed property managers Rempe's apartment to have exterminators drill holes in the ceiling to insert the pesticide, and then caulk the holes and over the cracks and crevices where the bugs can live.

Rempe said exterminators have completed two treatments in recent weeks and that there is now a major activity of bed bugs like her in the past. She said the exterminators also about the vacant apartments that share walls with your unit.

She is throwing most of their furniture, just sitting in lawn chairs or milk crates in her apartment with three bedrooms.

The family sleeps on the floor, with quilts and blankets can be washed weekly. Rempe said anything worth saving that is stored in the garage, waiting for sub-zero temperatures freeze the pests.

Rempe said when she launched her bedding and upholstered furniture in the container is cut, to prevent anyone trying to save.

Ogg said if you suspect that insects bed, a trap and bring it to an exterminator or extension office. With proper identification, pest control and surveillance must not let lung disease.

Experts sais that if you travel, inspect your luggage, wash clothes and vacuum bags. Be careful about used furniture and mattresses. I thoroughly inspect houses and apartments before moving in.

Because bedbugs are not known for spreading the disease, renters and hotel guests are not obliged to inform the authorities of health infestations. Many times, the magnitude of the problem is difficult to determine.
