Can someone recommend a scanner for scanning photos?

I have alot of pictures of my kids when they were young. I’d like to scan them to my pc. I have a scanner, but its old & the quality of the scanned picture is icky. Can you recommend a scanner that scans photos at a high resolution? Mine is so old it scans at a resolution of 150. Yuck!

150dpi? Wow, that is low. I’ve got a friend who said all you realistically need is 300dpi, akin to digicams having 6 to 7MP.

I’ve got the Epson Perfection 2580 Photo Scanner. It’s a flatbed format, can go 1200dpi+ resolution (IIRC, i never bothered to go past 600), save in jpeg or other formats with specific compression, and easy to use. There’s also included software that can touch up and restore old photos to make them even better with a just a few mouse clicks (which i don’t use, but the demo made it look easy and useful). It’s discontinued thouogh. I got it from the Epson store for $30 with free shipping.
If you don’t mind used stuff from non-retailer sellers, then someone on Amazon is selling it “used – acceptable” condition for

it’s a great basic/moderate scanner. I use it to just scan stuff. Period. Dunno what others look for, but if you are gonna spend $100+, be sure to get something more advanced… perhaps stuff like even better software, the ones that look like top feed printers that can scan a batch of 100 sheets without requireing u to manually feed it, or faster scan speeds?

Otherwise, I can say Epson appears to be a good brand for scanners based on what I’ve seen with the 2580. Their later models oughta offer improvements, not to mention still be available for sale. If you check their site (or other such discount sites) every now and then, you may wander into one of their clearance sales and pick up stuff WAY below MSRP and even get free shipping. As far as support goes, dunno about that, but I never had to call for them for my scanner. It’s been working faithfully fine so far the past 8 months or so i had it.
