What software or scanner type can I get to transfer original art to disc?
My gf is an artist and I want to help her put her work on disc so that it can be printed. Most of her work is larger than 11×17. Any ideas out there?
As an artist who scans his work to put on the internet, I must say the best way I have found is by using a digital camera. As long as you have enough pixels, you will get plenty of resolution on the finished image (I use a 6m pixel camera – Fuji F701.)
The first important thing is lighting. If you have a flash then this will reflect from the canvas (or whatever surface it is) and give an inaccurate picture. If taking indoors then turn off the flash, but you will need to put the camera on something stable like a tripod or table because of the long exposure. The best way I have found is to place the art on the floor outside where there is plenty of light and photograph downwards. Be careful that strong sunlight doesn’t give a similar reflection to the flash.
Once you have your photo, there will probably be a bit of background that you do not want. Use image editing software (My favourite it Paint Shop Pro) to crop the image exactly. You can also use the software to adjust the brightness and contrast of the picture to most closely resemble the real life piece.
I have found that by using this method I get a much clearer image than when using a scanner.
Some examples of my art photographed in exactly this way can be seen at my website www.jamespickard.com. These images have been scaled down for the internet but the originals are very high resolution and have been printed very sucessfully.

Digital cameras, printers and scanners are not absolutely essential for your PC's hardware, but in general, rarely found a small business today without at least two of the three peripherals.
Several reliable sources have estimated that very soon, the only people who prefer film cameras will be those who want the price of single-use disposable cameras and professional photographers who want to create certain effects that only feel with film. Can technology growing digital sending the film as Joe Soap's choice for capturing and storing his precious image memories? Well, as we discovered, the answer is definitely yes.
Digital Cameras
Digital cameras give you an impressive array of special features and modes that photographers could be just a dream some years ago. You can see an image on the LCD immediately after firing and whether you have the photo you want. If not, you can remove and try again, because no film or processing costs. You can quickly upload images to your PC if you wish, but a series of chambers not even require a computer – that transmit images from a CF card (CompactFlash) modem connected directly to the camera.
Storage is not a problem. The addition of a Microdrive can store hundreds, even thousands of images without recharging. The applications are endless – especially with the time lapse and remote control capabilities available on some cameras – making it suitable for science, medicine, nature, and monitoring work. Other Digital Cameras offer video, and some can record audio notes with each frame. Many scene modes, manual controls, the ability to synchronize with an external flash, or burst shooting modes up to 2 frames per second at full resolution. And, of course, their websites can be totally transformed quickly and easily through the publication from images taken with a digital camera directly into your site.
Note that while two million-pixel digital cameras are more than sufficient for most households and small offices, enthusiastic and avid photographers will have to invest at least a three-megapixel model.
Scanners
Scanners, once the domain of design houses and printers, have become almost as common as printers. Over the last couple of years, the scanner has become quite cheap and relatively easy to use, making it a valuable addition to any home or business PC setup. And now exciting images can easily incorporate into their presentations, web pages and brochures.
In essence, a scanner is a set of silicon cells photosensitive measuring reflected light off – or transmitted through – an original. These measurements are projected on the levels (eg 256 levels per primary color scanner 24-bit) by an analog-digital converter, and stored as binary digits that can be viewed and manipulated by the computer.
For most models These days, initiating a scan is as easy as pressing a button on the scanner itself or in the interface. The use of interfaces parallel or USB port on the Most newer models have eliminated the tortuous task of installing a SCSI card. The design and construction to the less expensive scanners showed that were capable of providing images perfectly suited for the average user.
As a rule, the minimum color depth that you should consider for the scan photos and documents is 24 bits (8 bits per color or shade of gray). But even the best 24-bit scanners suffer from noise, which means that do not meet the dynamic range a typical picture. In theory, a higher bit depth should be always better than less, but unfortunately this is not always the case. For example, some manufacturers use a CCD 24-bit and combine with 10-bit instead of a standard 8-bit ADC to stretch the power range of colors in the shadows and highlights. Thus, in this case, a very good 24-bit scanner can still give a better picture of a 30-bit mediocre.
On the other hand, if you're scanning slides, negatives or transparencies, which have a tonal range broader than printed photos, 30 bits is the absolute minimum you can get away with it.
Printers
It is well known that the printers laser have a higher speed and quality advantages over their print companions companions, the ink nozzles. But if so, why not everyone has a laser at their desks? Well, so far, the laser printer has also had to face some seriously big 'cons – High price and heavy weight. But the good news is that the last batch of lasers definitely has lost weight and in price.
If you print heavy loads of text documents and are not very impressed with the quality of inkjet printing, laser is calling out to you. (Not part with your inkjet however, if you need to print color documents or photos.) zippy lasers not only sharp, but its consumption is much cheaper too. Toner Cartridge a laser may cost more than an ink cartridge inkjet, but lasts much longer, it all adds up in the long run, especially if it is printing.
The laser is a solid workhorse and can fit in well in any business environment. About the Author:
