Does anyone know where I can find software to use my digital camera as a planetary scanner for books?

As far as I understand it, those $15k+ planetary scanners used by libraries to digitize old and delicate books are just simple digital cameras with software that “flattens” a page out by correcting the perspective curves in the image (eg. near the spine). If you already have a good digital camera, is there a inexpensive (sub$100) software package that would help correct the perspective distortion to make a DIY planetary scanner?

A barcode scanner (or barcode reader) is a computer peripheral for reading barcodes printed on various surfaces. A reader bar code consists of a scanner, a decoder (either built in or external), and a cable used to connect the reader with a computer. Furthermore, almost all the barcode readers currently produced contain decoder circuitry analyzing the image data from the barcode provided by the driver of photos and content delivery bar code to the scanner's output port.

Types of Barcode Scanners: —

For the technology: —

• Pen type readers: Pen type readers consist of a light source and a photodiode are placed side by side on the tip of a pen or wand. To read a code bar, the tip of the pen moves in all the bars in a steady even motion.

• Readers CCD: CCD (Charge Coupled Device) readers (also known as LED scanner) uses an array of hundreds of tiny light sensors lined up in a row in the reader's head. The important difference between a CCD reader and a pen or a scanner laser is that the CCD reader is measuring ambient light emission of the bar code whereas pen or laser scanners are measuring reflected light a specific frequency originating from the scanner itself.

• Camera-based readers: the 2D imaging scanners are the fourth and final type bar code reader currently available. They use a small video camera to capture an image of a barcode. Then, the reader uses sophisticated techniques of digital image processing to decode the barcode.

For Housing: —

• Handheld Scanner: With a handle and typically a trigger button to activate the source of light.

• Stationary scanner: Wall-or table mount scanners barcode is passed under or beside. These are commonly found in the box counters at supermarkets and other retailers.

While bar code readers are commonly used in retail stores, and industry low cost to barcode readers open a number of applications for individual consumers.

While camera phones are not optimal for many traditional barcode, 2D bar codes are optimized for mobile phones. These open a number of potential applications for consumers:

Movies ·: DVD / VHS movie catalogs

· Music catalogs on CD, play MP3 files when scanning

· Catalogs of books

Grocery ·, nutritional information, making shopping lists when you use the last of an article etc.

· Personal property inventory (for insurance and other purposes)

Owned cataloging · stored in boxes in the garage, basement, attic, self-storage units, etc. for easy retrieval, the sale of surplus on e-bay, etc.

· Calling cards: 2D barcodes can store contact information for import.

· From brick and mortar shopping: portable scanners can be used to record items of interest to search online when I get home.

Managing discount ·: weeding expired coupons.
