How can you determine how old a violin case is?
I recieved a violin and case via Freecycle tonight, with the intent to use them in an art project. The case seems awfully old, however, and I’m wondering if there’s any suitable way to track who made it.
The stamp on the back says something like “G&B” with the words “Official” and “Improve” in a circle around the above letters. The case itself is painted black, with I THINK grape leaves hand painted on. It’s really gorgeous, and I plan to fix it up if I can, to carry a newer violin in it. I just wonder if I could find the original maker to get it fixed ‘properly’.
The only thing I could think of to do would be to ask a violin maker or an experienced violinist if they can identify your case. As to the other guy’s response, carbon dating only works on carbon-based, or natural things, and is only used for really old objects, so I doubt it’d work for your violin case. However, I did find this website: http://pages.akeslingerantiques.com/5055/PictPage/1920562121.html
Hope some of this helps!

Projects Abroad Medical Volunteer in Sri Lanka Sets Up Help Line Counseling
Mohit Singh volunteer doctors from Canada, has left a lasting legacy following his placement in Sri Lanka.
Located in the General Hospital near Kalutara Nagoda in May this year, Mohit began attending sessions with the psychiatrist Dr. Wijesinghe. He immediately realized that the most common reason for patients referred here attempted self-harm or suicide. Making a little research, Mohit found that Sri Lanka has the highest suicide rate in all of Asia, the suicide rate for women is the highest in the world.
Mohit said his comments to Dr. Wijesinghe and proposed the idea – common in the West – the creation of a help line that could provide advice and support emotional support to people in emergency situations. The doctor agreed that he had considered, but still very busy at the hospital, and with few similar projects in Sri Lanka, which could provide a template, which did not have time to test the idea in practice.
Mohit immediately undertook to see if the system could be made to work. Looking across Sri Lanka, he found a company that ran similar support services in other cities. With evidence that help lines counseling could work elsewhere, he knew he could convince people that it was possible in Nagoda. He went to overseas projects in Sri Lanka, who agreed Mohit work with and the hospital and try to get the project off the ground.
The next step, seeking official permission from hospital authorities and the Ministry of Health, was the most difficult and Mohit was a nervous wait as the decision took nearly a month to get ready. Finally, we received the good news she had been waiting for, and the practical side of the project was quickly implemented.
A cell phone has been purchased, which can be used anywhere in the hospital and Dr. Wijesinghe, along with hospital counselors and social workers have agreed to man the online help. This month, the new service has been widely advertised in newspapers and on posters in the hospital. He is now officially open to the public and people who have first call started calling in Mohit says: "I hope that knowing that this helpline is to reassure people that they are not alone in combating their problems. However, the Helpline Hospital is currently only available when Dr. Wijesinghe and his staff are working in the hospital. This means that 9.5 and 12-3 Monday to Friday afternoons weekends. "
As Mohit says, "this is a great start and of course better than having no help line to all." However, it has many suggestions of how current and future volunteers in Sri Lanka can continue and develop the initiative. "The ultimate goal of the Hospital of the Helpline is to be 24 hours, toll-free service to remain open to the public free of charge at all times, "he says.
One of the most important of things that volunteers can do is control the amount of line being used. The more people who call them are helping, the more convincing the case will be to expand the service. Mohit said that volunteers made Nagoda General Hospital staff may help psychiatry to record statistics and to publicize the work they are doing. It also suggests that volunteers teaching in schools or working in the fields of tsunamis and households care, talking to children and young people about the positive aspects of sharing problems and asking for help. This could lead to reducing the stigma associated the subject. Another idea is that children can be encouraged through arts and crafts classes, to make posters and bookmarks advertising the helpline.
Finally Mohit hopes that businesses may find that the project sponsor, allowing callers to use the service without having to pay for your call. As is relief, even if the helpline can prevent one person from harming themselves, it's worth the effort.
