What is an LVDT?
The letters LVDT are an acronym of linear variable differential transformer, a common type of electromechanical transducer that can convert the rectilinear motion of an object that is coupled mechanically into a corresponding electrical signal. LVDT linear position sensors are readily available that can measure movements as small as a few millionths of an inch to several inches, but are also capable of measuring the positions of up to ± 20 inches (± 0.5 m).
The internal structure consists of a transformer primary winding centered between a pair of identically wound secondary windings, symmetrically spaced about the primary. The coils are wound in one piece hollow form of thermally stable polymer reinforced glass, encapsulated against moisture, wrapped in high permeability magnetic shield, and secured in a cylindrical stainless steel housing. This coil assembly is generally the fixed component of the position sensor.
The variable component of an LVDT is a separate tubular frame magnetically permeable material called the nucleus, he is free to move axially within the hollow coil and mechanically coupled to the object whose position is being measured. This hole is typically large enough to provide substantial radial clearance between the core and gave birth without any physical contact between him and the coil.
In operation, the LVDT primary winding is activated by an alternating current of amplitude and appropriate frequency, known as the primary excitation. Electrical output signal of the LVDT is the AC voltage differential between the two secondary windings, which varies with the axial position of the core within the LVDT coil. Normally this AC output voltage is converted by the electronics DC level suitable for high voltage or current that is more convenient to use.
