Why do i hear a faint ringing when i put on my unplugged soundcanceling earplug?

i have creative earplugs, they cancel outside noises. but i keep hearing a ringing sound, a high pitch sound if i concentrate hard enough. weird. unlike the noise when you plug both ears with your fingers, the sound of the distant engines in an airplane cabin; this high pitch sound is continuous. once unplugged, i can no longer hear it and all is normal. it is faint. i use the earplugs to cancel out noise and it is not plugged to any device.
