I am having trouble finding the right emergency weather radio. Shortwave..NOAA..CRANK …SOLAR POWER?
I cant find one that gets NOAA Alerts and is also a shortwave radio. Why?
NOAA All Hazard Radio, the new name for NOAA Weather Radio, is designed for local area warnings only. Therefore, a shortwave frequency is not used.
There are two main reasons for this:
1. Warnings are best handled by the local NOAA National Weather Service office which is responsible for most local warnings, advisories, and forecast. This lower power broadcast will make it less likely to interfere with another distanced NOAA weather radio station that is broadcasting at the same frequency for their local area.
2. When a warning is issued through the radio, a special code is sent out to activate only the area that matches this frequency code. Because there are a limited combination of codes it can use and a limited distance this code can be heard, the low power NOAA broacast same code can be reused again.
Since a shortwave radio broadcast frequency can be heard well passed the distance of the local office area of responsibility. The short wave radio frequency range is not really suited for this kind of broadcast needs.

Using wind energy to your home
The first thing to watch, before you consider converting wind energy is the area where you live. A windmill solution obviously requires wind. More specifically want to wind speeds in excess of 8mph on average. Even 8mph is considered a low wind speed in the area of wind turbines. 12mph average is ideal.
To begin, take the time to look at the lists of wind speeds to suit your area:
If you live in the U.S.: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/online/ccd/wndspd.txt
If you live in Canada: http://www.wunderground.com/global/Region/CN/WindSpeed.html
If you live in the UK or Europe: http://www.xcweather.co.uk
If you live in Australia: http://www.wunderground.com/global/Region/AU/WindSpeed.html
Assuming the average wind speed in your area is above 8mph, then proceed to other considerations below. If you not live in a suitable area, then you should consider converting solar energy instead.

Wind Turbine Considerations
Once you have determined that wind energy is suitable for your area are a few other things you should consider. Really this is just to ask some questions and answers. Taking the time to do is make sure you choose a wind power system that fits. Especially if you are planning to live off the network, you should take the time to answer these questions before you begin.
Their energy needs
The first thing you have account is its energy needs. Are you simply looking to reduce your energy bill with a single small windmill? Or, you want to all the house?
If you are seeking the power throughout your home, you should take the time to calculate their actual energy requirements. If you take the time to download Earth 4 Energy, the guide comes with a calculator and instructions on how to do this (you need this guide anyway).
Energy Storage Wind Turbines
From the answer to your first question, then you need to consider the construction of a storage system of wind turbine. An array Simple batteries can be designed to store as little or as much power as needed.
If only the construction of a small wind energy solution to reduce their energy bills then it's probably less of a concern.
Moreover, if you are looking to live off the network, you will need to consider energy storage. You must use your calculation for its energy needs for the design of this part of your system. Consider how much energy is needed to store and for how long.
If you have weeks where there is less wind than usual, make sure you have a large enough battery to matrix compensate (or even better to work to reduce energy requirements by using light bulbs and appliances with high efficiency).
Have a backup plan security
Finally, for those planning to live completely outside the system, you must consider your backup plan. For most of us a constant power is a requirement. Make sure your design solution of the wind turbine with a backup plan. In general, a small generator gas is enough to ensure you have power, if something goes wrong.
