How do police trace mobile phone calls?

i was watching the tv show neighbours and the police tapped the phone line to see where the calls were coming from. I just wanted to know how the whole process works because i found it interesting watching. Why was the police officer wearing headphones during the call and how do they trace the mobile phone?

They ask the phone network operator to trace the calls. (they need a court order to do this) The equipment at the exchanges has the facility to trace calls built-in. Tracing is based on the phone number (calling or called) The conversation is recorded and passed on to the police. Police listening in in real-time is more unusual.

Since the 1980s, mobile phones has become an expensive item used by business people to a very popular communications device that is used by most of the general population. Cash In fact, nowadays, mobile phones outnumber the telephone land line many countries.
