Anyone know the quality of the Midland 75-822 Handheld CB Radio?
I’m thinking of getting one to keep in touch with my family on long shopping excursions and need a handheld, fairly cheap CB. Any help is appreciated.
I mean a HANDHELD CB radio. I have tried FRS radios and the range is very limited within busy stores and parking lots because of the obstruction. The short Rubber Duck antenna would work well would it not?
A CB radio is probably not the best choice for the use you have stated. For starters, the antenna on a CB is very long. You would have to extend it every time you wanted to use it, then push it back down so it wouldn’t be a hazard.
Try the FRS radios. They are small, easy to use, and because of the frequency range have a nice compact antenna and are cheap.

Your Guide to Two Way Radios
A two-way radio is a device that transmits and receives voice signals through the air. They work something like a phone, but they do not require a central network that can be used anywhere! With two-way radios, two or more people can have a discussion without matter where they are – sometimes while they are miles away! Another common name of a two-way radio is a "walkie talkie".
The most common type of two-way radio for regular consumers is the FRS / GMRS two-way radio. These are the radios that are normally seen in the big box stores. FRS and GMRS are different frequency ranges, or channels, that these radios can operate. FRS channels and 8 although there are 14 GMRS channels are 15-22. Channels 1 through 7 are shared, and are used by both the FRS and GMRS systems.
All radios in your group will be established on the same channel before it can communicate. For example, if your radio is set on Channel 7, which will send her voice through that channel when they speak, and listen and allow you to listen to others talking on channel 7. It is always important to remember that these channels are public! Always be careful what you say in a two-way radio, because you can never be sure who is listening.
Al choose a channel, privacy and the range should be your main concerns. If you are using a single channel FRS, due to government regulations of its radius only delivered in a maximum of .5 watts of power. This power usually will take between half a mile and a mile of range. If you use a GMRS channel, you can achieve maximum output power and reach of its two-way radio. However, if you are using a GMRS channel, you're required by the FCC to buy a license to operate at these frequencies.
With regard to privacy goes, if you choose a channel and see that there are others who use the same channel, you must switch to a different channel to avoid confusion. Sometimes, as in an amusement park sang, 22 channels are simply not enough to provide privacy. Because of this, most medium-range radios and even They also provide "privacy codes", which break a single channel anywhere between 38 and 121 sub-channels. When you figure in the codes of communication private, many radios offer more than 1000 individual channels for you to choose from.
Some two-way radios operate on AA or AAA batteries. You will also find that many of the radios come with rechargeable battery packs and chargers desktop. If you buy a model with a rechargeable battery, you get the convenience of batteries batteries and more, will still be able to run on normal batteries if your battery happens to flight before they return to their boots.
