How do you determine a linear, power or exponential equation?

When given a set of data how do you determine wether to use a linear equation, a power equation, or an exponential equation?

Simplest is to plot the data and see what the graph looks like: a line, an exponential curve or a power curve.

In Chapter III of The Power of Yin:

Barbara: I'd like to ask you, Jean, if you have specific images of the future. Do not use future if the word is too linear.

Jean: They do not even to speak of my own images, I can talk about what is emerging. Not permitted prophecy in our culture, what is hidden and appears as science fiction. They hear color, which appear healthy, they touch taste, the taste is God, and the smell time. They can look on the scent of a flower in the desert, and believe that galaxies billions of light years away. They have a great freedom in time and space. They can experience five minutes, ten hours and therefore review material that normally would take ten hours to five minutes. His relationship with machines. . . all these mythogems take place in modern times, but their relationship is very different machines.

When Don Juan or St. Valentine, Michael Smith, are about of the machines break down, break, disappear. It is as if they were making use of a symbiotic ecology of doing different things done.
