mtb headset rubbing on top of marzocchi forks?

hi, i just got my new marzocchi dirt jumper 3 forks…..i put the headset race on them….then i slip it on the frame when i go to tighten it all up and try to turn the bars and i struggle to turn them….it seems asif something is rubbing …. so i take it all apart again and find silver marks were the bottom headset has been rubbed of the fork….what should i do next….

It sounds to me like you forgot to take the crown race off of your old forks and install it onto your new forks. It’s a small metal ring that sits at the bottom of the steerer tube and mates up with the lower bearing on the headset. Without it, exactly what you’ve described happens.

If you dont know how to do it, you can take the old fork and new fork to your LBS and they’ll swap it from one to the other for a couple bucks or you can buy a new crown race and have it installed.
