What are the duties of a Marine honor guard?

My dad was a Marine honor guard. He claims he was a glorified bellhop on the Connie(Constellation). He’s gone and I was wondering what exactly he did.

First your father was a United States Marine. There is no “second” when you talk about the Marine Corps.

My father was a officer in the Navy WWII-Vietnam. Yes,
marines have varied duties at sea. So for most every occasion,
every VIP visitor, every “Flag officer” (Admiral), Navy Marine Corps birthday, change-of-command, special promotions, awards, retirements, etc. they would have to dress and present arms, display the colors. Funerals in WWII, and if held in the home port, etc.

Duties: uniform care and presentation, keeping what hopefully were display rifles polished and practice. A lot of hassle and work then you have to escort VIPS (or face it often civilian fools) everywhere, often folks from other countries, if one gets say half a dozen naval officers around, well one gets half a dozen “requests”, I did such in ROTC but not in the service, it was not a duty for officers and Senior NCO’s. It should be.

Tradition is what it all means, keeping faith with our Corps and Naval service, and by all means: having Marines do it because the sailors (God Loves em all) do not get trained or practice much. Marines are in Naval service to:

1. repel all boarders
2. keep and encourage good order and discipline
3. leave the big ships, get on little boats and “hit the beach”

Got to actually sail with my father (a most “unpleasant” officer)
it was well after WWII and he was assigned to Japan, we were on a MTS ?? ship with families and a battalion, regiment of Marines. He was senior officer but a passenger but he pulled watch. In a few days I was down wth the troops cleaning weapons and such, what a thrill for a boy. In 17 days I learned everything about the M-1, what a “spit shine” boot should look like and what Brasso was: trust me when I was in ROTC then service: I was years ahead of the other men.

Tradition is important. It binds us to those that served with John Paul Jones or stormed the shores of Tripolli!

The Royal Marines are part of the British Armed Forces.
