Consumer Reports – cordless telephones
It's easier than ever to have a phone where you want. The newest generation of mobile Wireless allows you to put a phone in any room of the house, even if no phone jack is near.
However, manufacturers continue offering a bewildering variety of phones: inexpensive models that offer the basics; multihandset, full-featured phones with a built-in answering automatic, with a single line and two phone lines, digital and analog phones, and different frequency bands. In many cases, a phone have a brother who your answers. Many who come in a telephone answer phone version only. If you have a cordless phone that is several years old, is probably a 900-MHz phone. The newer phones use higher frequencies, ie 2.4 or 5.8 GHz They are not necessarily better than older, but can provide more security and call a wider range of useful capabilities and features.
What's Available
AT & T, Bell South, GE, Panasonic, Uniden, VTech and account for more than 70 percent of the market. VTech owns AT & T Consumer Products Division and now makes phones under the AT & T and its own name.
The current trends include phones that handsets support two or more with a base, less expensive 2.4 and 5.8 GHz analog phones, and with all features 2.4 and 5.8 GHz digital phone. Some of the multiple mobile phones, capable phones now include an additional phone with a charging cradle. About a third of cell Wireless sold include a digital answering machine.
The major distinction between wireless phones is how they transmit their signals. Here are some terms you may see while shopping and what they mean for you:
Analog. These phones are the cheaper type available. They tend to have the best voice quality and enough range to let you chat anywhere in your home and garden, or even a little further. They are also is unlikely to cause interference with other wireless products. But analog transmission is not very safe, because anyone with a scanner or wireless device RF comparable might be able to listen in Devices phones are also more likely than digital phones to suffer occasional static interference and RF other wireless products. Price: U.S. $ 15 to $ 100.
Digital. They offer the same range as analog phones, but with greater security and less susceptibility to RF interference. And, as analogue is unlikely to cause interference with other wireless products. Price: U.S. $ 50 to $ 130.
Digital spread spectrum (DSS). A phone call DSS distributed through a number of frequencies, providing an extra measure of security and more immunity RF interference. The range may be slightly better than the analog or digital phones. Note that some phones DSS – usually the 2.4-GHz or the Multi-enabled mobile phones from phone to phone the ability to speak – using a wide swath of spectrum, even in standby mode can interfere with baby monitors and other wireless products operating in the same frequency band. Price Range: From $ 75 to $ 225 (for multiple phone systems).
Frequency. Cordless phones use one or two of the three frequency bands available:
* 900-MHz. Some manufacturers are still under cost, 900-MHz phones, usually analog. They are fine for many households, and still represent about a quarter of the market.
* 2.4-GHz. The band most phones now use. Unfortunately, many other wireless products – baby monitors, wireless computer networks, monitors home security, wireless speakers, microwaves – use the same band. A 2.4-GHz analog phone is inherently susceptible to interference RF wireless devices, and a 2.4-GHz DSS phone may cause interference to other products. However, DSS phones presented as "802.11-friendly" is unlikely to interfere with wireless computer networks.
* 5.8-GHz. The band use the new phones. Its main advantage: less likely RF interference because few other products that currently use this band. Some phones are dual band, but that just means they are transmitted between the base and handset in a band and receive in another, you can not change or choose one or the other side.
HIGHLIGHTS
Standard features on most from wireless phones including mobile phones earpiece volume control, telephone ringer, last number redial, a pager to locate the handset, a flash button to answer call waiting, and a low battery indicator.
Some phones allow the support of two or more devices with one base without the need for extra phone jacks. Additional devices, including load bearing, usually sold separately, although most phones are grouped with a premium rate phone and cradle.
An LCD, which is found in many phones and at some bases, can display a personal phone directory and useful information such as name and / or number dialed, caller ID, battery strength, or how long it has been connected. Caller ID displays the name and number of the caller and the date and time of call if you use your telephone company service call identification. If you have caller ID with call waiting, the phone displays the data in a second call when you're on the phone.
A phone that supports two lines can receive calls for two phone numbers – useful if you have, say, a business line and personal line want to use from a single telephone. Some phones have two fingers, each with a distinctive tone to let you know that the line is ringing. The two feature line also provides two user conferences in three way connections. Some two-line phones have a connector port for connecting an auxiliary data fax, modem or other device from another phone that can also be useful.
A loudspeaker offers a practical means free to talk or wait on hold and also allows others to tell us. A base speakerphone lets you answer a call without the headset, a handset speakerphone lets you chat hands-free anywhere of the house while you stay a few meters from the phone.
A base keypad supplements the telephone keypad. It is very useful for navigating menus schemes as they do not have to pick up the phone to his ear to pierce the keys. Some phones have a keyboard light that glows in the dark as lights or when you press a key, or when the phone rings. This makes the phone easier to use in low light conditions. All phones have a phone ringing, and many phones have a ring at the base. Some allow you turn them on or off, adjust volume or change the auditory tone.
Many cordless phones have a headset jack on the phone, and includes a belt clip to carry the phone. This allows hands-free conversation anywhere in the house. Some phones have a headset jack on the base, which enables hands free conversation without any drain on the battery device. The headphones are usually sold separately for about $ 20.
Other convenient features include auto talk, which lets you lift the handset off the base of an incoming call call and start talking without having to press a button and an answer key.
Some phones provide a battery holder for battery backup — compartment at the base to charge a spare battery or phone to keep alkaline batteries for base backup power, either of which may allow the phone so that if you lose household AC power. However, it is prudent to keep a corded phone somewhere in your house.
Some multiple mobile phones, capable of allowing conversation between mobile phones in a way to facilitate intercommunication and cell conference with an outside party. In the intercom mode, the phones must be within the scope of mobile phone base using the headset. Others lack of this device to your ability to speak, but it lets you transfer calls from phone to phone, but not to use conference phones with a outside call. But other phones allow direct communication between terminals, so you can take with you to use as walkie-talkies. Some phones can register up to eight devices, for example, but that does not mean you can use all eight at once. You may be able to use two phone to phone intercom while two others conference with an outside party.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Decide how much hardware you need. The basic choices are independent of phone, a phone with a built-in which he responds, or a phone that supports multiple telephone base. A stand-alone phone is right for small families or people in a small apartment with little need for more than a phone. The built-in answerer, a common option, adds a measure of comfort. A mobile phone is good for many active families who need the phones throughout the house, this type of phone you can put the phone in a room that has a phone jack.
Select technology and frequency band. A 900-MHz phone must satisfy most users, but such may be difficult to find because between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz models dominate. Is likely to find a wide range of models and prices with 2.4-gigahertz phones. But if you want to minimize interference problems with other wireless products, look for a 5.8 GHz or 900-MHz phone. Phones analog, tend to be less expensive than digital, are fine for many people. But if privacy is important to choose a DSS or a digital phone.
To ensure that you are actually getting a DSS or a digital phone to its security in the transmission of voice, check the packaging carefully. Look for words like "phone digital "from" digital spread spectrum (DSS) "or" frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS). "Phrases such as" phone with the digital security code, "" the phone with all digital answerer, "or" spread spectrum technology (not digital spread spectrum) indicate that all phones are less secure.
Phones that use dual-band transmission may indicate the frequency high in a big impression on the packaging. If you want a true 2.4 or 5.8 GHz phone, check the fine print. If the frequency is only prominent in the packaging, is probably similar.
Decide upon the features you want. Usually, you can expect from caller ID, a headset jack, and a base that can be mounted on the wall. But the features do not end there, both for the self and by telephone, answer phones. Check the box or ask to see a manual instructions to be sure you get the skills and characteristics that are important to you. As a rule, the most feature loaded phone greater is its price.
The variations in performance. Consumer Reports tests show that most new cordless phones have very good voice quality in general. Some are excellent, approaching the voice quality of the best corded phones. In our final analysis, most fully charged nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) or nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) operates eight hours of continuous talk time before recharging is needed. Most manufacturers claim a battery fully charged, the latter at least a week in standby. When they can no longer hold a charge, a replacement battery, usually proprietary, costs about $ 10 to $ 25 and can be difficult to find. Some phones use less-expensive AA or AAA rechargeable batteries. (To find a store that recycling of used batteries, call at 800-822-8837.)
Give the phone a test drive. At the store, hold the phone to your head to see if you feel comfortable. It should fit the contours of his face. The earpiece should have rounded edges and a recessed center that fits perfectly in the center of your ear. Check the buttons and controls to ensure they are reasonably sized and legible.
Do not discard the corded phone. It's a good idea to keep at least one corded phone in your home, if only to emergencies. A cordless phone may not work if power is lost, and a cell phone does not work if you can not get a signal or the circuits are full. A telephone wire based their power from the telephone system and can operate without AC power home.
MESSAGE CENTER AND answering machines
Digital answering machines come as separate devices or as part of a phone / combo drive contests. The main advantage of a combo unit – less mess – has to be weighed against the loss of part of the combo, if the other is wrong. Respondents usually have standard features and capabilities as the selectable number of rings and a line of savings, answerer on / off control, call screening, remote access from a touchtone phone, and a variety of ways to navigate through your messages. Most messages have a day and time, you can delete all messages or only the individual can adjust the speaker volume, and may retain the messages of congratulation and after a momentary blackout.
Other Features answerer may wish to consider are the number of mailboxes, advanced playback controls, remote access, conversation recording, a screen against the message indicating the number of messages received, and a visual indicator or audible message alert that lets you know when you have new messages.
In Consumer Reports tests, the majority of respondents provides a very good voice quality for recorded messages and good quality for the greeting. Phones that you allow you to record your greeting through the phone (ie, using remote access) is usually a better sound. Some let you listen to your greeting through phone, instead of listening when the speaker base, which gives a better indication of how the greeting will sound to the caller. Price: U.S. $ 20 to $ 80 (stand-units only), $ 30 to $ 240 (combos).
