Is it illegal to have a fire scanner in your vehicle in NY state??

Is it illegal to have a fire scanner in your personal vehicle? I am a volunteer firefighter and ive heard that you cant have them. Ive also heard that you can have a scanner but you cant have police frequencies programed into it, only fire. does anyone know?

I’d advise you to check www.dmv.org or Google “scanners”. Since you are a volunteer fireman, I would assume you are permitted to have a scanner (at least in areas where there are no full time firefighters), but I doubt police scanners are legal. I would check before removing my scanner, since, as stated, it is a requirement for your job.
