where can I buy the correct type of filament transformer for my amp at a decent price at rush shipping?
I am in a rock band with a show planned out. The other night we were practicing and everything was fine. The next day we came back and my amp powered on, but the tubes didn’t heat up. I took it to the repair shop and he said I’m gonna have to get a new filament transformer, and that may not be all. I called CRATE (LOUD TECHNOLOGIES) and they quoted the price as 89.00 with 4-6 weeks delivery. I have a show on the 9th. I got on Ebay and found several filament transformers but I don’t know which ones will work. Do they have physical size differences AND ratings differences? Do they have more than one name (i.e, is filament transformer the same as output transformer or push pull transformer?) I’m just trying to find a cheaper faster alternative to get us back on the road in time for our gig. Ebayers send stuff way faster than companies, and they are way cheaper, I just don’t know how to find what I need. It’s a CRATE BV-120HB BLUE VOODOO 120 WATT TUBE HEAD.
I can’t find a schematic on line for this amp, but I did find its 60-watt counterpart (the CRATE BV-60) at http://www.schematicheaven.com/index_HTML.htm.
That model uses a power transformer that supplies both the high voltage and the filament voltage, plus the bias voltage and low voltage, from four separate windings. My guess is that your BV120 has the same sort of thing, though it’s probably not the same transformer as in the BV-60.
If that’s true, what you really need is a power transformer (there is not a separate filament transformer). In that case ,and if your repairman specifically said you needed a “filament” transformer, I might suggest looking for a new repair person.
Unfortunately, it looks like you will have to get the part from CRATE unless you can get the exact specs and hunt down a substitute. As an alternative, you might be able to find another trashed amp of the same type with a good transformer that you can cannibalize.
Finally (maybe it should have been first) have you checked the fuse and the tubes themselves? It’s not likely if you say the amp “powered up”, but stranger things have happened.

Light Up The Night
The landscape lighting is an extension of the beauty we see during the day, the transformation of the night more dramatic, romantic, even mysterious scene.
Life wakes up in a landscape that otherwise appear dark and dormant. Suddenly, textures and colors emerge, and what was once almost forgotten becomes the new focus.
Connect your home and Landscape
Well executed night lighting can be an extension of the interior of a house, allowing patios, pools, and pathways to be used for entertainment, restaurants, or relax. The subtle lighting can create the romance, intimacy, and mood – enhancing the outdoor setting in ways they never have experienced.
Lighting can also offer safety, security and a sense of wellbeing, while providing the opportunity to enjoy of its beautiful scenery, both day and night. Light can define the boundaries of the property and add depth, color and hue.
One of the America's greatest architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, referred to light as "trim". The light increases. Its purpose is to complement, not compete with architecture.
FAQ's
Q: Will I get the same high quality results with a packaged lighting set of a retail store?
A: No. Light box sets have a pre-determined selection of style and maximum cable length, which restricts placement of light, while offering no flexibility in the choice of the bulb. Moreover, these processors do not generally provide multiple voltage outlets compensate for voltage drops, which is not consistent in brightness from one device to another. In short, professional-quality accessories offer increased durability and more options.
Q: When do I have low voltage landscape lighting installed?
A: The best time is during the installation phase of the landscape so as to minimalize interruption, but the lighting can be easily incorporated into your existing landscape.
Q: Why 12-volt light?
A: Low voltage lights are safe, economical, offering a wide variety of lamps and fixtures, and provide better accuracy and quality of light with the truest color of sunlight 120-volt lamps.
Q: Are all lamps (bulbs) alike?
A: No. tungsten halogen lamps produce a whiter, more intense light than incandescent lamps of comparable power, which allows for excellent color rendition and consistency of light output for the life of the lamp.
The quality of the reflector mirror coatings and alignment of the filaments are critical, too. The thickness and the application of these coatings ensure that no cracking or peeling under stress from high temperatures. Aligning suitable filament in the reflector ensures accuracy and uniformity of the light beam lamp. You can avoid many future problems by using the illumination of the highest quality components available.
Q: How important is the voltage?
A: Absolutely critical. Determines proper voltage and coherence luminescent life expectancy of the lamps. The work of the transformer is to reduce 120 volts to a secure, efficient, economical 12-volt current. A low voltage transformer is the heart of a professional lighting system landscape. Using a multi-tap transformer to compensate for voltage drop, where distances can occur is recommended.
