is it wise to buy a 2nd hand digital camera?

I want to buy a digital camera. I’m not really fussed about quality, just need something thats less than 3 years old, 5-8 megapixels and works! Is it a really bad idea to buy a 2nd hand one of a 2nd hand shop? They do give a 1 month guarantee. Do these things not last long?
