Which company makes the best desktop scanner?

So far I’ve bought Epson, are there any better companies? I use it for scanning documents, postcards.

I’m not an expert so I apologize for my answer. Not too long ago computers were high priced (thousands of dollars), not very fast, and not user friendly. Today, just about everyone can afford a computer and even the cheapest computer has more processing power than the most expensive computers of 10 years ago. Scanners have gone through the same kind of growth process. So if you look at any of the major companies like Dell, HP, Epson, Lexmark, Canon, Kodak, Fujitsu, etc. you’ll find very similar products with very similar quality.

From a personal opinion standpoint, I’d suggest a flatbed scanner instead of a sheetfed scanner for 4 reasons:
1. If the original material doesn’t move you get less chance of shifting and a better scan with more detail.
2. Flatbeds are more versitile. If the original fits on the glass you can scan it (books, business cards, clothing, etc.)
3. Flatbeds have fewer moving parts, less things to break.
4. Most flatbeds have better quality whether used as a printer, scanner, copier or even a fax (if you choose one of the all in ones.)

Again, personal opinion says when you compare products you should look for two major things: make sure whatever you decide to get has built in optical character recognition software (OCR). Most scanners do but without OCR you’ll have a difficult time scanning handwritten and other kinds of documents. And second, get a machine with the highest resolution you can afford (measured in DPI – dots per inch.) Low end scanners might be 1200 x 1200 and high end could be 4800 x 9600 or higher. Hope this long-winded response helps a bit.
