I have not been able to access my desktop icons after deleting Windows Police Pro virus.?
I followed the instructions on getting rid of Windows Police Pro, but now I cannot access the internet and have nothing on my desktop as far as icons. I also cannot access the start menu, etc. Anyone been able to solve a similar problem?
I got rid of it yesterday…finally…then got a message from Microsoft saying my computer had just recovered from a catastrophic event. I couldn’t open any programs the normal way or at all, could only get online in a roundabout way, error messages out the wazoo. What a nasty virus!!
MacAfee had been disabled, and was useless. I also could not download/open any new removal programs so had to do it manually. SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY partially worked and got rid of some of it, and HIJACK THIS! still worked and was a big help, but the only sure way is to manually check as Police Pro lodges itself all over the place!
Do the following in “safe mode” if possible. Hold down F8 when computer is starting…before “Windows is starting up…” screen. (It will tell you you’re in safe mode and screen will look different than normal. Log off/shut down as usual). This should make it possible to access things easier.
1. Add/Remove Programs. Remove Windows Police Pro
2. Open Windows Task Manager (ALT+CTRL+DEL). Go to “processes”. Anything running that says “ASTRV” or “svcchasts”….turn off! so it’s able to be deleted.
3. Use “AUTORUNS”…download from “removal-instructions.com/st-removeWindowsPolicePro.html”. Most likely in the LOGIN or SERVICE tabs. Find the illegitimate files (”Nalperion”, I believe, is the manufacturer listed for Police Pro). Delete malicious entries so they will not run – otherwise you can’t remove them!!!
4. Check a site that lists the registry entries to delete. I didn’t write them down, but there are about 4 entries to delete. “Regedit” on my computer had been diabled so I had to find it and reinstall. Somewhere in the Registry there is another instance of “Windows Police Pro” Program File. Make sure not to miss that one! Remove it!
5. Using “My Computer” or “Windows Explorer” delete: a) “Windows/system32/dddesot.dll” (and anything else that might say “desote”; b) “Windows/system32/ASTRV.exe c) “Windows/svchasts.exe” (there are a lot of “svchost” entries that are not malicious….”svcchAst” are bad!
6) use HIJACK THIS! if you have it or can download it to make sure you’ve got everything. Police Pro related entries can come up as 02) BHO 1CQSYS {76DCOB63-1533-4ba9-8BE8} and 023) “svcchasts.exe” or an entry with “ASTRV” in it/ Delete any and all of these then rerun to make sure they are gone.

Law enforcement recently has been following the mainstream of government and public service fund by seeking computing solutions in the direction of Linux. In particular, law enforcement, their needs match the open source software. They have to work based on the budget of a taxpayer, and open source is free or low cost. They need high security, and Linux is still the highest rated operating software in official assessments of government. They need mission-critical reliability, and Linux is so stable that not only outperform the competition on stability – that makes competition go away!
Recent examples of enforcement bodies of law in finding open source solutions:
* The Kent police have reduced the cost of managing their major criminal investigations system by a factor of 90% using Novell Linux Open Enterprise Server. The migration to Novell enabled Kent to Holmes expand its research system II to work in larger projects with a broader scope – something that had never been done before. May also be run on their hardware they could find cheaper, thanks to the light requirements of Linux. A new police operating system, called Genesis, is now being tested for the scalability of Linux servers.
* Delivery of the first Linux systems to the power of the West Yorkshire Police could see police forces England and Wales unanimously switching to Linux desktops in a pilot program again. The deployment is performed under a contract awarded by the British police IT organization. If successful, will lead to more than 60,000 desktops deployed. In West Yorkshire alone, the installed base is around 3,500, and a spokesman estimated that the savings would be about one million pounds per year!
* The New South Wales Police Department is conducting a major upgrade of its information infrastructure, necessitated by the increasing volume of data handled by force, and are changing to Linux to handle the load. Because Linux systems are proving to be as reliable, they are waiting for greater network capacity more efficiently archive and transmit the data stored as evidence, such as surveillance video and audio material.
* The Scottish police forces have also developed a Linux-based system to ensure that they comply with the law of Freedom of Information Act, an act which aims to facilitate open government, allowing the public to request access to government data. From open source and open information go hand in hand, the system has reduced easily saved and tons of work. The force does not have to worry about proprietary formats of the media's ability to interfere with public access to data, and efficiency of Linux system allows a large amount of manual tasks to be automated in which she could not before. The system is literally back to officers on the streets because he has saved everyone a lot of work.
* Police in the city of Munich has 14,000 of its computers changed the department of Microsoft's Windows operating system to Linux. The motivation of the decision was that the government less dependent on a supplier of information technology, and to save money and increase capacity. A technology analyst, even compared the break-through migration to the fall of the Berlin Wall, referring to the conditions of oppression to deal with the agenda of a software company owner.
That the government feels friendly to open source should not be a surprise. Traditionally, systems, the Internet has been 80% of Linux and Unix since its inception. The Internet service was first initiated and maintained by providers of government, which uses Unix systems built on multiple tasks and excellent speed characteristics create a fast, reliable network. Linux, a modern version of that ideal of Unix, has already established itself as the leading system for the deployment server room, but now the effects are starting to get to the user level desktop and workstation deployments, which are discovering that Linux systems have features workspace ready built in to other commercial operating systems are beginning to discover and implement.
In addition, Linux systems come with a guarantee that, because they are open source, any business can restrict its use in the future. A platform ported to Linux, you can stay in Linux, without the vanishing support and constant updates to create problems down the road.
Finally, the inherent security of the Unix computer model ensures effectiveness of Linux without having to worry about security issues. Because there is indeed a virus that can infect a Linux system known, and critical security operates in the systems, even by the standards of security, the departments are also considering Linux as a measure to protect our national database under concerns over national security and the terrorist threat in our modern times.
