Coast Guard?

I want to be an AST in the Coast Guard. But everybody is telling me that after college I should go straight to becoming an officer. I don’t know what an officer does, but all I know is I dont want to deal with all this technical sciency engineering sh!t, I JUST want to jump outta helicopters and save peoples lives while risking my own in dangerous waters!! Any help, this is so confusing!

I enlisted right out of college and don’t regret it a minute, it is a decision a lot more people are making these days. Sure you’ll make more money as an officer, but I think being enlisted is a lot more fun. I see it like this, as a 22 year old right out of college, I want to be the person on the small boat doing the boardings, shooting the guns, jumping out of helos, ect. Maybe when I’m a little older that feeling will change and I look forward to driving a desk, but by that time I’ll hopefully be a chief and be doing that anyway. But basically, to answer your question, to be an AST and jump out of helos, you have to enlist. Don’t not go to college though, it will help you out in your career, either in the Coast Guard or when you get out. (plus you can get a singing bonus if you enlist with a degree). Use your GI Bill to get your masters.
