Churchill Downs is home to famous Kentucky Derby, but also hosts several other major horse races and peoples. In addition to the Derby (at 1 is grade race game), is the Kentucky Oaks (Grade 1), Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (Grade 1) and the Clark Handicap (Grade 2).
When Churchill Downs opened first time in 1875, the first Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks were held that year. The Derby was originally a mile and a half, but the distance was changed to the current mile and a fourth in 1896. The first Kentucky Derby in 1875 attracted a field of 15 horses aged three and a crowd of 10,000 people. The first horse to win the Derby was a horse with the name of Aristides, trained by Ansel Williams. Williams later became a coach in the Hall of Fame. The colt was ridden by Oliver Lewis, who also riding to victory in the Belmont Stakes.
The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade 1 race of cuttings of three years, thoroughbred fillies held each year at Churchill Downs. Along with the Derby, the Oaks is one of the oldest contested sporting events in history. It is also the only race held in its original site. The Kentucky Oaks was run at four distances from a mile and a half a mile and a quarter mile and one sixteenth of the last mile and an eighth of the race is run today. The Oaks is like the Derby for fillies and is considered the second most popular horse race of assistance. The race attracted 100,000 spectators in 2001.
The Reserve Woodford Classic was formerly known as the Early Times Turf Classic Stakes. The opening race of the race took place in 1987. The race is sponsored by Woodford Reserve, a distillery American whiskey. This turf race is normally held prior to the Derby the first Saturday of May each year. That runs in one and one mile for three-session years.
The Clark Handicap is a Grade II race for three year olds and up. The race was first run in 1875 and is held annually in late November and early December at Churchill Downs. It is between the oldest races in the U.S. and is still held at Churchill Downs today. The race was named Col. M. Lewis Clark, the founder of the Louisville Jockey Club that built Churchill Downs. The length of the race has changed four times since its inception and now run a mile and an eighth.
