What metals are best for a condenser (capacitor) microphone?

I am going to attempt to build a panel condenser microphone (a large, flat mic about 1/2 foot by 1 foot that picks up everything on a theatrical stage), and I do not know which metal to use for the backplate (aluminum foil is pretty much my only option for the diaphragm, unless anyone can think of anything better that I would still have easy access to). I can get an array of sheet metals; steel, aluminum, brass, copper, but I don’t whether to use something more conductive or more insulative (I’m guessing the former). Any suggestions?

For the backplate it shouldn’t matter much. I think I might use aluminum as it is east to work with and light. Another possibility would be an un-etched copper clad circuit board which would have the relatively flat, rigid and stable epoxy-fiberglass board for support and the copper foil for conductivity.

I’m not sure if the conductivity would be enough, but you might try aluminized mylar for the diaphragm. If you can find the very thin aluminized mylar it will heat shrink to some extent which may help getting a smooth taut surface.

Capacitors are very common in electronic circuits and second only to resistors as a circuit element in electronics and a wide variety is normally on all electronic products workshop. They are used in filters, both in power-supply filters and signal filters, often in connection with operational amplifiers.

Capacitors are important in integrated circuits, and may be made of metal or poly silicon films with dielectric silicon dioxide on silicon. They are used in several different ways in electronic circuits including sometimes to store a charge for high speed use.

Elements are very common and are one of the three basic elements-mail along with resistors and inductors that make up all passive electrical circuits. Generally they are cylindrical shape and has 3 / 8 brass nails for connections to the flat bar or other heavy drivers, and can be found in many electrical and electronic equipment, such as a camera flash. Ceramic capacitors are another old favorite, based on high dielectric constants of ferroelectric ceramics. Unfortunately, ceramic capacitors are not very stable and have high losses, although this is not serious in its usual applications.

Condensers are designed to withstand a maximum voltage determined and are ideal if the tension does not vary too fast and not excessive. The capacitors electrolyte are probably the most sensitive to temperature extremes. The oxide layer grows with a polarity, but dissolves with the other polarity, so are polarized electrolytic capacitors, and must be connected the right way in a circuit.

For large capacities, the thin dielectric layers deposited chemically electrolytic capacitors are the choice.

At present, the air adjustment dielectric capacitors are not common, have been replaced by small mica capacitor dielectric or plastic.

Filter capacitors are common in electrical work and electronics, and cover a large number of applications.

Experts say that if capacitors are not right, begin to deteriorate after three or four years instead of waiting for the duration seven years.
