You need to charge the laptop until it finishes 100%.
It depends on the laptop brand and size, some laptops get charged faster where as some are slow. My old laptops battery is not working due to long hours of charging so, you should not charge it for a long time.Check out the laptop manual there it will be mentioned how many hours you need to charge.If you dont have the manual simply goto google type your laptop brand and Model no. and your question you’ll surely get the time.

New batteries are shipped in a discharged condition and must be charged before use. Generally, we recommend an additional charge (approximately twelve hours). See user manual for charging instructions.
Rechargeable batteries should be cyclical – fully charged and then fully discharged – two to four times initially to enable them to reach their full capacity. (Note: it is normal that the battery is hot to the touch during charging and discharging).
New batteries are hard to the load device, have never been fully charged, so they "report". Sometimes the device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, remove the battery from the device and reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again. This can occur several times during loading battery first. How can I maximize battery performance?
There are several steps you can take to ensure that you get maximum performance from your battery:
Break new batteries

Prevent the Memory Effect

It's a good idea to clean dirty battery contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. This helps maintain a good connection between the battery and the portable device.

Do not leave the battery dormant for long periods of time. We recommend using the battery at least once every two to three weeks. If the battery has not been used for an extended period of time, perform the new battery break in procedure described above.
Battery Storage
If you do not plan to use the battery for a month or more, we recommend storing in a clean, dry, cool and away from heat and metal objects. NiCad, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries will discharge during storage, remember to break them before use. Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries must be kept at full charge during storage. This is usually achieved by using Trickle special boots. If you do not have a trickle charger, do not attempt to store SLA batteries for more than three months.
