The car is a 97 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC

Bank 1 sensor 2 is the O2 sensor located after the catalytic converter in your exhaust system.

If your car is a V-8 this will be on the drivers side (bank 1).

If the catalytic converter is failing it can cause this code to be sent, basically because the exhaust contains the same components after the converter as before the converter.

A catalytic converter is very expensive so most shops will recommend changing the sensor first to see if that corrects the situation before replacing the converter.

This will definitely cause the car to fail a smog test, if money is tight I would buy the sensor at a parts house and change it myself. It is a very easy job and the part is probably 50 or 60 bucks. Even if that does not correct the problem you will spend less than having it diagnosed in a shop and at least you will have eliminated the sensor from the list of possible causes.

If you google “replace O2 sensor and the model of your car” you will find a lot of info on how to change the sensor, it is like changing a spark plug, Then have the parts store you buy the sensor from clear the code for you after you change it and see if the light stays out.

Good Luck!
