Why do most new cars have the antenna on the middle of the roof in the back?

The auto manufacturers used to put it either on the side or in the windshield (my personal preference). In fact, I have an ‘06 Fusion with the antenna in the back windshield but in ‘07 they started putting the little black antenna on the exterior in the middle of the roof. I think it ruins the appearance and aesthetics of the car. Is it just done for financial reasons or is there another reason?
