Uniden Scanner takes a AC 10 Volt power supply, can I substitute another type of Adapter without problems?

I have a BC244LCT Uniden Bearcat Scanner w/o Power Adapter.
Manual states it only takes a:
10 VAC using AC-144U AC Adapter in a AC 10V power jack
I would like to know if I will or can use another voltage w.o problems to device?

You’re going to have to get it as close to that value as possible. I wouldn’t go over that value, but you could probably go under by a volt. It also has to be AC. Most adapters output DC so this is going to be a harder one to find. 9V AC adapters aren’t that uncommon and MAY work for you. There’s another figure that you really need to make a good judgement on an adapter and thats amperage, probably milliamps or mA in this case. I went and looked up the AC-144U on Google and found that it’s 300mA. This figure can be higher, and should be at least slightly higher if you’re going to try and go to 9V AC. Just don’t go any lower than 300mA. It can be as high as you want. Radio Shack carries a 9VAC 800mA adapter. I’m not sure if the plug will fit, but it should electrically work. They have a return policy so try it out or better yet, bring the scanner with you and try it. The stock number is 273-1770 and it costs $20. However, I’d suggest getting the original. With the recent growth of VoIP and Internet telephony, has also been an increase in the selection of hardware available for use with VoIP. This new range of hardware can sometimes be confusing for the user to buy a VOIP phone system. This article will explain the different types of VoIP phone systems that are available, and offer some suggestions as to what to look for when selecting one that meets your needs.

VoIP phone systems can be grouped into three broad categories. 1) USB phones, also known as VoIP or IP phones, 2) Phones with built interfaces to high speed connections Internet, called hardphones and 3) interface adapters for regular analog telephones to high-speed connections to the Internet, referred to as ATA (phone adapters analog) or IP phone adapters.

The first category, the USB devices can be divided into two types. The first type is simply a phone with headset and microphone and possibly a keyboard and display, which interacts with a PC softphone (such as those provided by Skype, Firefly, etc.). It only handles the analog voice signals, tone generation and display Caller ID information, while the softphone is responsible the rest of the application of Internet telephony.

The second type of USB device will have a keyboard, display, earpiece and mouthpiece very similar to the first type. However, this type comes with driver software that connects the phone directly to the high-speed connection to the Internet. This software runs in the background, as a printer or a modem driver. All markings, display and voice conversion is handled by the receiver, and a softphone for PC is not required.

USB devices are available in wired and wireless. The wired headset will plug into the USB port via a USB cable. The wireless versions will have a base station that plugs into the USB port, while the phone keeps a wireless connection to the base station. This type of cordless phone operates in the same frequencies as regular analog phones use wireless.

VoIP phone systems in the second category, cell phones with built interfaces to high-speed connections to the Internet (hardphones), operate independently of a PC and connect directly to the Ethernet port DSL modem or cable modem or router. Such a device offers more features, and can go from a phone wired to a full desktop speakerphone. In this category you will see all the same features that are available on regular analog phones with the addition of some unique features to mobile Internet. This may include features such as videophone capabilities, interface with SIP providers and integrated data ports.

Hardphones are also available that connect to high speed internet connection using WLAN or Wi-Fi. These phones offer the most flexibility, since no wiring to participate in all as it only requires a wireless LAN connection active within the range.

The third category, ATA or IP phone adapters, require a regular analog phone to implement a complete Internet phone. You may want to use an ATA if you already have a sophisticated wireless system analog phone with multiple handsets. ATA has a hardphones well below cost, and allow you to take advantage of their existing telephone hardware. ATA, as hardphones, interfaces are also available with WLAN and Wi-Fi for high-speed connection to the Internet.

Some of the features to look for in VoIP phones include video capability, speakerphone, headset, intercom function, color LCD screen, built-in data ports and ringtones selectable. An important consideration when choosing an Internet telephone system is compatible with your provider. Be sure to check the specifications of the manufacturers, and if your VOIP service provider recommends or supports a specific telephone system.

Some of the major brands of VoIP are Vtech, Uniden, Philips, USA Robotics and radio technologies. Linksys and Dlink are two companies with extensive experience in data networking equipment that produce ATA types. Vtech and Uniden offer some of the most advanced wireless VoIP phones and hardphones. His leadership in the field of traditional wireless analog phones have been given an advantage in the production of feature-rich Internet telephone systems. Linksys and Dlink offer some of the most capable teams in the field of ATA type equipment, including multi-ATA ports or modems and routers with a function of ATAS.

As you can see, there is a wide selection of equipment available for the implementation of an Internet phone. When choosing equipment, look for hardware that is easy to connect and configure, and as simple to operate as possible. Ideally, using VOIP phones should not be more complicated to use a normal analog phone, but with the added benefit of the characteristics unique to Internet phones.
